Sweet baby Owen -
Mommy CANNOT believe that you will be turning TWO in a little over a week. I just can't believe two years has already gone by. I can barely remember what our life was like before you joined our family...but, it seems like just yesterday that Payton was walking into the hospital room to meet his new baby brother. Our plans have always been to have more than two kids, so it is not likely that you will be the baby of this family forever, but you are for now...and, there is always a chance that you will be our last....so, I think I am holding on to the "baby" Owen for as long as I can....excited to watch you grow-up but scared to let go of my "baby."
You are an amazing child. So much like your big brother but so very different at the same time. I don't like to compare the two of you because you are obviously two different people. Prior to Owen, all we knew in the world of parenting was Payton, so its hard not to compare. You still follow along the same lines as your brother with your verbal skills and your sports skills. You are a talker and you repeat everything. The cutest thing you have started is this: Mommy: "Owen did you have a good day at school?"Owen: "Ummmm.....yes." Mommy: "Owen did you play outside today?" Owen: "Ummm......yes." Mommy: "Owen did you slide?" Owen: "Ummm....no." Mommy: "Did you swing?" Owen: "Ummm.....yes." You get it, he says "ummmm" before giving his final answer. I, ummmm, have no, ummm, idea where he, ummm, got this from!! I don't really want this habit to stick but its cute for now. I also LOVE how you say your name...you say Owen with such excitement, like its the greatest name around. We knew early on that your name would be Owen but, the way you say it makes me love that it is your name even more. If ask your name, you say "OOOOOw-ennnn." Also love how you say "Pay-Ton"....very clearly "Pay" "Ton" with a short pause. I especially love when you send "Pay" "Ton" to time out for "3 minutes!" Adorable :)
Tonight at dinner I asked you why you did something....his response, "because." What
You are stubborn and independent. My Mom's favorite stories to tell are of me being an independent child and saying "I do it mysef!" Well, if pay back exists in the world of parenting, I'm in it with this kid. I used to think that Payton had my "temper" and stubborn streaks...I'm realizing that he is his Daddy and Owen is his Mommy. Oh sweet Owen, why or why do you have to be so independent. I'm fine with an independent child - you will likely make quick friends and be a born leader - but, right now, your independence is a problem. You are going to hurt something or someone along the way. Another perfect example....you CANNOT "do it yourself" in the pool....why...because you can't swim yet....but, that doesn't stop you....you don't want to be held, you want to do it yourself. You want to do everything yourself - once again, the last thing I want to do is wish away the years - but, if you are going to want to do EVERYTHING yourself, I wish you could be big enough to do it YOURSELF. We are going to have some major battles in our future....I mean, we already do, but eventually things will be bigger than car seat buckles, jelly beans, and spilled drinks!
You do not want to be held, you want to walk. When you walk, you do NOT want to hold hands...once again, the "do it myself" mentality...but, you are going to get hurt! We've had more than one occasion where you refuse to walk any further while holding my hand so you just lay down (yes, all the way) in the middle of a parking lot. The Lord is watching over you for now but you make my heart skip a beat (or 10) nearly every day!
You are brave - you climb higher than you should, you jump further than you can, you fall down....and you jump right back up and do it again. I think this has to do with being a second child. Monkey see, monkey do. Yes, whatever your big brother does you are two steps behind...and, you could care less that he's twice your size and two years older. You are equal in your eyes....and, you hate being left on the sidelines when he plays sports. Don't worry, one more year and you'll be on the teams too!
You love tractors, cars and big trucks. You LOVE to play outside and constantly ask to go "pay" outside or "go pay garage" or "go pay on porch." You are 100% boy...110% if possible. Your favorite sports seem to be football, baseball and basketball. You love bubbles....and, you are finally getting to play with your first birthday present which was a Tow Mater push toy that blows bubbles....you love it! You like going for walks and riding in the stroller. You like looking for birds and alligators. You LOVE the beach and the water and the sand. You LOVE the pool...but not the sprinklers! You freaked out while getting a hair cut today. You like going to church but you like it better when Payton is by your side. You love FOOD.
Food....boy oh boy do you love food. I'm worried you may be overweight at your 2 year check. Really, I am. This is likely because I deal with little kids and their weight all day everyday and most o my patients are underweight....so, you look like an NFL linebacker compared to them. Your new favorite food is cantaloupe, although you just call it "flu-it"
You know when you are doing something wrong...so, you just laugh and smile and run faster to get away with it!
You love to read.
You don't often sit still...but when you do it is SO sweet.
You were a Mommy's boy until the last month - you are slowly turning into a Daddy's boy and I don't like it. You have been asking (demanding) that Daddy put you to bed....I don't like this because bed time was our best routine. Books, rocking and singing. You love to read. You ask to rock. You ask Mommy to swing "Rock a bye" and you snuggle, snuggle, snuggle. You give kisses and hugs and I love it!
You still have your pacifier. I know, we should get rid of it, but you love it. You don't take it to school (and haven't in a year) but as soon as you are in the car or at home you are asking for it. We only have 2 pacifiers left but somehow they manage to hang around. You are doing a little better only sleeping with it and we've been telling you that the alligator is going to eat it. Hopefully we can get rid of it very soon.
You love all your classmates but outside of school, your best buddies are Jack and Drew and John Warren. You like playing with them at church, cookouts, etc.
Sweet little Owen I love you so much and I love the little boy you are becoming. You have a strong personality and there are days that you clearly wear us down to get your way. This is something we are going to have to work on as parents.....but, whats one more jelly bean going to hurt?!?! We are going to have to work on it and we better get to work sooner rather than later. I have learned that when Payton is not around, you are a different child. I look forward to spending more time with you alone over the next year. You are a wonderful child and you bring so much fun to our family. We laugh more because of you. We smile more because of you. We love bigger because of you...and, we certainly, say "that kid" or "did you see what he did" or "Owen!" more because of you! I love the Mommy of my two boys and I'm so thankful that God gave you to us nearly two years ago. We're looking forward to celebrating your birthday with a big Cars party.
I love you little "O-ee,"
Mommy
