Saturday June 16th was Owen's big day! Our baby boy turned TWO years old and we had a full day of celebrations....and I'm excited to report that he has his Mommy's birthday genes....he knew it was his birthday and he told everyone all day long. On top of that, he only got a few small presents from us (because he has a REALLY big one in the back yard). He didn't quite understand that the big present was in the yard so when he realized he only had 2 bags to open, he kept saying, "I want more!" I'm guessing Owen may not be like his sweet big brother who has graciously donated money in leiu of gifts as donations or local efforts since his 2nd birthday.
The week before Owen's birthday was a little hectic - with the boys in NC and Daddy at Montreat with the High School youth from our church. I was here alone but that didn't mean I wasn't busy! It was one of the craziest weeks I've had in a while. Owen and Payton made it back home late Thursday night with Chandra, Allen, Calyn and Carson. We enjoyed our day on Friday. As I went to put Owen to bed the night before his 2nd birthday, I took a few extra minutes to rock and snuggle with my ONE year old. As each year goes by, my time to have these moments gets smaller and smaller...I was happy to have a few extra minutes with my sweet Owen on Friday night. I asked him if he knew what tomorrow was and he quickly responded "Owen's birthday!" Oh yes, we were all ready for Owen's birthday! Grandma and Grandpa arrived late Friday night with the big surprise!
He woke up Saturday morning telling everyone that it was his birthday - Owen and Payton ran around for most of the morning while Allen and Grandpa got to work on the big surprise.....a play house for our back yard. Chad wasn't home yet - he was traveling back from Montreat with the youth group so he missed out on all the fun (however, even if he had been there, he had a dislocated left elbow and probably wouldn't have been too much help!).
It started off looking like this......
While we worked on the play house, the boys found everything they could to play with. They even found a pet frog...Payton claimed he new his "friend" Happy the frog lived under the basketball goal. They watched the frog and followed it around for about 30 minutes. Owen "hopped" like the frog!
The work on the play house continued...
...and Owen got his 1st look at the big prize...I wish I had captured his facial expression because as he rounded the corner to see his big birthday surprise he said "WOW! Owen's house!" It was adorable and I hate I missed catching a photo of his sweet face and his excitement!
Allen and Grandpa worked and worked and worked!
Finally, we had the finished product!
It was time to play! The birthday boy got to try it out first...Chandra was actually away at the pool with the big kids so it worked out perfectly!
I "SA-LY-DE"
I love my big surprise!!!
Love this picture of Grandpa catching Owen as he comes down the slide!
My cousin Leslie and her kids, Moses and Rachel, were in Summerville visiting one of her friends. They were able to come visit for about two hours. It was so nice to spend a little time with them....short, but better than nothing! We had a great time with them!
Rachel tried out the slide.
Lunch break...Owen and KK enjoyed sitting on the picnic table.
The hard workers examining their finished product.
Payton and Moses playing in the playroom.
Daddy made it home from Montreat around 3:00...he hurt his arm while he was there (dislocated his left elbow, required complete sedation for it to be reset at the hospital in Asheville, and it was still swollen, bruised and not exactly usable when he got back home). Once he was home, we celebrated with Owen's cake. It was exactly what he wanted.....a "Lite-nin' Queen Cake!"
Owen and his 'Queen cake!
All he wanted was the cake....but he wouldn't even eat it! He ended up having jelly beans instead. Maybe he didn't get my birthday genes afterall....I LOVE cake!
After a few pieces of cake, Chandra, Allen, KK and Carson had to head home. They packed up and headed back to NC. We played for the rest of afternoon on the new play house....luckily, Grandma and Grandpa also bought Owen a swing and he LOVED swinging in it!
Happy Birthday to my sweet baby Owen. We love you and we love all the spunk you bring to our family of four. I was never sure I would know how to handle a boy....especially two boys....but, I know that you were sent straight from God as our second child. You are stubborn and independent. You are sassy and bossy and you will do it "Yo' sef!" You are full of smiles and giggles. You copy everything your brother does - words and actions. You are Mommy's boy and Daddy's boy...and this changes from day to day. As for your grandparents, I don't like to pick favorites but you seem to be Grandpa's boy too....I think its because he taught you to "bump heads." Don't worry, there is enough love to go around and I am sure you love each of them equally....Grandma gives you extra treats and Meme always has all your favorites...and Pawpaw is one of the few who can snuggle and rock you to sleep....you love all of your family! I can't count the number of times I've heard you say "KKs" or "Caar-sen" and you love to give hugs. You thrive off of routine. You love school and look forward to going everyday. You love all things boy - sports, trucks, cars, tractors. All of these things make you special. You are just as you were meant to be and I am so thankful that I was chosen to be your Mommy. You are a handful and we will have our challenges...but, I can't help but see myself when I look at you.....even though you don't eat cake! Happy Birthday little "O-ee!"
I love you!
Mommy
