Webb Family Vacation, Day 3

Saturday July 23rd

Another day in the big city....New York!

For our third day in the city we went 100% tourist. We started our day with a Greyline sightseeing double-decker bus. Did I mention it was still 100 degrees? Hot, HOT, H-O-T! We boarded the bus in Time Square and by the end of the day we had been all around downtown. It was a great way to see all the parts of the city...somewhat quickly.

We saw the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Macy's, 5th Avenue, Wall Street, the site of the World Trade Center, the church outside and the new Freedom Tower, the Brooklyn Bridge, The Waldorf Astoria, The United Nations, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Carnegie Deli....and a taxi or two!
Need a ride?
I even learned my favorite place here in the city – Magnolia's – was actually featured in Sex and the City...I had no clue my little gem was famous! Just looking in the window makes you salivate!

The Webb's in Soho

We got off the bus in Chinatown, walked through Soho and into Little Italy (I think). We had lunch at the above restaurant that claims to be the oldest pizzeria. The pizza was good but the place was hot and crowded. They did not have any high chairs and they were looking to turn tables so we were rushed. Being as stereotypical as possible, I felt like this was 100% a New York experience for dining!

After lunch, we headed further south to the Staten Island Ferry terminal. We decided against the free ferry ride and viewed the Statue of Liberty from a perfect spot in a waterfront park area. Maybe we'll get a little closer to Lady Liberty on our return trip to the city – but, at 100 degrees and toting a frequently fussy sweaty baby, the ferry ride didn't seem to be the best option this time!

We jumped back on our bus and finished up our tour for the day. I will agree that for a quick trip around the city, this was the way to go. If only it had been about 20 degrees cooler..... One highlight of the day was the amount of people selling "Ice Cold Water!" to the hot bus passengers.  Payton still walks around yelling "Ice Cold Water! One dolla!"

Payton and Owen were both pretty good on the bus. We had a few moments through the day but overall, they were perfect! We rewarded the whole group with afternoon milkshakes from Juniors – fabulous! After cooling down, we all enjoyed long afternoon naps.

For dinner, we had previously selected Virgils Barbecue – being the Barbecue lover that I am, I had already decided I would be ordering a burger – I was sure I wouldn't want this New York “attempt” at BBQ. I was pleasantly surprised. Virgil's was far from typical New York (whatever that is!!). It looked like an old southern restaurant inside and I was very surprised to find Carolina Pulled pork with Vinegar based sauce on the menu. I had to admit, it wasn't my favorite BBQ (but neither is the BBQ I am forced to eat in South Caroline....it was better than that!) but it was just perfect to finish off our day.  The dishes were complete with Mac-n-cheese and baked beans! Owen loved it as usual. He has loved to eat on our trip for sure.

We took a quick post-dinner trip into Toys R Us. Once again, Payton was excited to be there and Owen quickly found things to point out too. He was amazed with all the larger than life toys – trucks hanging down, huge stuffed animals. Payton picked out two Cars 2 toys but, since we can get those at Target, we didn't purchase today.

We found a few interesting sights in a packed Times Square – anything goes in New York!
Snapped a few quick pics and headed away from the crowds and back to the hotel. The kids were tucked in bed a little earlier tonight and the adults stayed up and chatted late (again!).

Tomorrow will be our last half day in New York. We will board our train for Boston at 3:00.

Favorite Parts of the Day:
   Junior's Chocolate Milkshake
   Downtown Bus Tour
Ground Zero – not that it is a good sight to see, but, it still gives me chills to see the sight in person.
Cold water being sold for $1 along the bus route!
   Statue of Liberty

Worst part of the Day:
Having water spilled on my pizza
Stepping in gum
Having a branch hit me in the head on the bus tour
THE HEAT!

Payton's Favorite Parts of the Day:
He is still talking about the baseball game!
He talked A LOT about riding the Subway (and the rats on the tracks!),
He knows the trains are underground
He talks about all the Taxis
...and his favorite part of today: Spiderman (in Toys R Us).

Next time you hear from me, I'll will be a little further north in Boston!
