Summer Camp

Payton is LOVING the fact that he is old enough to go to summer camp.  Owen is HATING the fact that he is not old enough.  Owen keeps saying that he is almost 5...because he has heard one too many times "you can do that once you are five."  Poor little guy, he just wants to be a big boy!

Payton is attending the Citadel Baseball camp at Park West this week.  This isn't the "official" Citadel camp...the head coach isn't there, it is not on campus, etc....but, that really does not matter to a five year old (and, to his paying mother it works out much better anyway!).  One of the assistant coaches and a few of the Citadel baseball players help run the camp.  It is from 9 - 12 each day.

Yesterday was his first day...he was SO excited. Unfortunately, he started feeling bad during camp.  He didn't have to leave early but when I got there to pick him up he was pale and looked like he was about to puke!  I was pretty sure it was the heat...but, he didn't seemed convinced and even said he did not want to go back on Tuesday.

Thankfully, the promise of a scrimmage awaited him on Tuesday....and the fact that Daddy thought he could swing by to watch a little of the scrimmage.  Off he went again this morming....extra water, gatorade and snacks in his bag to help if he started to feel sick...and he did great!  He had a great hit in the scrimmage and a great catch on second.

He is one of the youngest out there.  I am mostly proud of him for trying something new.  Payton is not shy at all but he often gets upset when he is put into new situations, especially when he doesn't know anyone.  There are only about 50 kids in the camp - ranging in age from 5 - 12.  He spends his time playing amongst the 5-8 year olds.  He does not know a single kid but that hasn't slowed him down.

It is so fun to see him having fun!

He still has basketball and golf camp in the coming weeks.  I asked him today which one he was most excited about.  He thought for a second and then said he was so excited about all of them!

I can't believe my sweet boy is old enough to head off to baseball camp...but he is, so we better embrace it and share in his excitement!

Jessica - This reminds me of the first time I took Hugh to the Battery soccer camp on Daniel Island. He was the youngest one there, he didn't know anyone, and it was his first "real" sports camp. He loved it and never looked back, but I went to the car and cried that first morning! I'll be thinking of that when I drop him off tomorrow morning for this year's camp :) Glad Payton is enjoying his camps and you know Owen will be there soon!
