First Surgery

Payton had his ear tubes placed last Monday, March 8th at MUSC.  Everything went great.  We arrived at 8:45 and we were back in our car, heading home at Noon.  The pre-op experience was wonderful.  They gave Payton some medicine (like Valium) to relax him and help with his anxiety when he had to leave us to go back for surgery.  The medicine started to work in about 5 minutes.  His speech was slurred and he was laughing at everything.  Chad and I thought it was hysterical!  We were laughing so hard!!  I'm sure most parents are a little too anxious to laugh - I guess it was a good distraction for us!  He enjoyed playing with the toys the child life specialist brought him.  He loved playing with the doctors kit and hat.  He got to keep his clothes on, he got a very cute OR hat, and he didn't even need an IV.After the medication had started to work!
Enjoying his "doctor hat" and doctor kit!

The procedure took about 20 minutes and we were quickly called back to the recovery area to be with him.  He was a little fussy as he woke up from the anesthesia.  It took a good 30 minutes for him to truly wake up.  Once he was awake and the nurse felt confident that he could drink she let us go.  Once we were outside he started to act more like Payton.  We knew everything was ok once we drove past McDonalds and he asked for chicken nuggets!  I was shocked at how quickly he had recovered and we did end up taking him to Chick-fil-A for chicken nuggets!  He took a good afternoon nap and woke up like nothing had ever happened!

Later that night you would have never guessed he had had surgery only 12 hours earlier.  He asked for chips and dip for dinner so we even went out for mexican!  For the first time in weeks, he slept in his bed all night for two nights in a row after he got the tubes placed.
