Owen was a scheduled c-section. His story isn't too exciting, but it is HIS birth story so it is worth sharing! We arrived to East Cooper at 5:55 am on Wednesday June 16th....5 minutes early! We had to wait a little to get checked in with admissions. I made it up to my pre-op room around 6:30 where the nurses started working to get me prepped for my c-section. Originally, I was scheduled for 7:30 but due to a more urgent case we were pushed back a little...no big deal! While waiting, I had my IV placed, got to see Dr. Evans (my doctor) and talk with the anesthesiologist. Chad had plenty of time to get his space suit on for his 2nd trip to the OR with me. I'm beginning to like the full body, tight, white suit on him! They took me back to the OR at 8:05. Chad had to wait, alone, in the hallway while they got me ready. Dr. Charles, the anesthesiologist, had my spinal placed within a few minutes. My legs and lower body were numb within seconds. I was a little anxious (mostly due to the memories from the 1st time with Payton) but that all subsided once Chad was allowed to join me. The curtain was placed between my head and my "belly." Chad was seated to my left and Dr. Evans got to work. It was so much better than the first c-section (just as everyone told me!). I barely felt anything - no pain, very little pressure. Chad and I even chatted with the anesthesiologist about our previous trip to Maui!! I was pretending to be in the spa at the Grand Wailia!
At 8:33 little Owen Calvin Webb made his introduction! Chad immediately stated that he had a head full of hair! Dr. G, Dr. Evans' assistant immediately brought him around the corner for my first peek. Chad started shooting pics and went around the corner with Owen. I got very emotional with hearing his first cries and my awesome anesthesiologist blotted my tears for me! Seriously, they must pay him extra! Within a few minutes, they brought Owen around to me to "hold" for the first time. It was so special! Chad went with Owen and the nurse to the nursery. I later found out that as soon as they left the OR to go the nursery little O started looking a little purple...eekk! They had to give him a little oxygen in the nursery but he perked back up immediately. His APGAR scores were 9 and 9...very good!
My nurse called to the nursery to check in with the nursery nurse. We got report that he was 7 lb 13 oz and 20 1/2 inches long. I was shocked that he didn't weigh a little more but happy to hear he was doing well! A few minutes later, Chad came back to the OR to check on me and give me an update on the baby. He had already shared Owen's name with our family members who were anxiously awaiting his arrival.
After about 30 minutes, I was taken to the recovery room and about 10 minutes later baby Owen was able to join me! It was such a wonderful feeling to finally hold him in my arms and see his tiny little features and all his hair for the first time. Chad joined us in recovery as well. I wondered how you could feel that overwhelming love for a second child immediately after birth but I was quickly reassured that it was still there and still just as strong! I was able to attempt to feed him for the first time and shortly after I was taken to my room.
Our family was eager to come meet him as well. Payton was with Aunt Chandra and Carson. They had a busy day at IHOP, Target and at Publix buying cupcakes for Baby Owen's Birthday Party! Payton did not meet his baby brother until a little later in the day.
