With a lot of possible choices and many great names to chose from, we finally made our choice of Owen Calvin Webb.
Many of you may remember that Payton Moses was named after two of our grandfathers. Payton was Chad's grandfather's middle name and Moses was my grandfather's first name. Payton was chosen before Chad and I were even engaged - we always knew that if we had a boy together his name would be Payton (Chad's sister, Chandra had already taken Carson from me - a name I had been planning to use since I was a young girl). Moses was always important to me but we had a tough time deciding if we should use Moses or Andrew (my cousin had already used the name Moses). My favorite heme-onc patient had the initials PMW, her first name was also Payton and she was a very brave little girl, so I thought it was only fitting to have my Payton share her initials in addition to my grandfather's name.
As we tried to think of a name for Baby Boy #2 it was a bit more difficult. We considered LOTS of names. We wanted a family name but we also wanted something that wasn't too common (like Jessica was in the 1980's). I called both of our parents one Sunday afternoon and asked them to list off any and every family name they could think of to help make up our list. Owen was on the list but it wasn't always the front runner. Owen is a family name on Chad's side. His uncle Carlton's middle name is Owens (with an "s") but we never really understood the significance. Earlier in the year, Chad's great aunt Evelyn passed away. It was interesting to us that she made sure her mother's full name was listed in her obituary - Eliza Owen Webb. Once we heard this news, we were set! We knew Owen would be the name.
As for the middle name, we had a more difficult time. We had four names on our list - Alexander (a family name on my Dad's side), Andrew (a family name on both sides), Creighton (my Uncle Alfred's middle name), and finally, Calvin (my Grandfather's last name, my mother's "maiden" name). For many reasons, we chose Calvin. My grandpa Joe is still living and we knew it would mean a lot to him to have a great-grandson named after him. In addition, he never had any natural children (though he is definitely my Mom's "Dad" and the only grandfather I ever knew on her side) so we thought this was a way to carry on his family name in his honor. In addition, I had a great-uncle Calvin on my Dad's side. He was by far my most favorite great-uncle.
In the end, we know we made the right decision! We love the name and we hope Owen Calvin will love it as he grows into it as well!
