I'm dreaming of a white christmas,
just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
to hear sleigh bells in the snow
I'm dreaming of a white christmas,
with every christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright,
and may all your christmases be white
May your days be merry and bright,
and may all your christmases be white
I have to admit this old Bing Crosby Christmas song is one of my favorites and I have dreamed of the beauty of a white Christmas for years. I think there was one other white Christmas in my lifetime (though I'm not certain if the snow I'm remembering was actually on Christmas day). When hearing the lyrics of the song, we do all slip away and picture the beauty of a white Christmas and hope for one of our own.
When living out a white Christmas while traveling over an hour with your own two small children in the car its not really so beautiful!
So, we were supposed to have lunch with Chad's family at his Aunt Gail's house - just a quiet, relaxing lunch before hitting the road. Instead, we inhaled our food while Meme gave Owen a bottle, got a clean diaper and headed out as fast and safely as we could! The snow was really coming down as we pulled away and had started to stick. The temperature had dropped from 38 to 30 in about an hour. Yes, to those safely celebrating Christmas at home, I'm sure it was beautiful...to me, not so much!
As we left from Aunt Gail's house - after we hurried though our "relaxing" Christmas lunch with Chad's family - the snow had started accumulating on just about everything but the road still looked okay.
When we were about 10 minutes away from her house, we passed one truck that had slid off the road. I looked over at Chad, white knuckled, driving onward towards my parents...knowing if we didn't make it, I would cry over missing my parents on Christmas but wondering if we should turn back. The next 20 - 30 minutes were a little intense but we finally made it to the interstate and following the state DOT trucks down I-77!
As we got closer to my parents house, I knew that once we made it we would be there for a while (snow is tricky on their long, steep driveway) and I also began to realize that we would have to spend Christmas apart from my Grandpa Joe...for the 1st time in my life. The roads were starting to get covered and it wouldn't have been safe for any one to try to go out in them just for the sake of Christmas...the presents could wait!
Finally, we made to my parents! Finally, we could both breathe and yes, finally, it was beautiful!
Bailey was the most excited about the snow. She loved it! She has only seen snow one other time when she was a puppy.
Payton was more excited too! To see Bailey and to see the snow! He was amazed that it was falling in our hair and kept commenting about it being stuck in our hair!
Living in SC, we may not ever see snow, so it is great that Payton has been able to experience it a few times while traveling in NC.
A perfect family picture for Christmas 2010 (minus Owen, who was still waiting in the warm car!).
So yes, after all, this did turn out to be a wonderful white Christmas...where the treetops glisten and the children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow!
The snow continued all day and night and we really enjoyed it on Sunday.
